Volunteer and make an impact!

Paxmead Riverside Base is owned by Girlguiding Surrey West; a busy residential site looked after by a small team of volunteers

We are looking for additional volunteers to come and help complete jobs  at the site, whether that be as a one-off visit or on a more regular basis.  Help from individuals or from corporate teams available for a volunteering/service days would be welcomed.  We are also looking for individuals to join the paddlesport team – full training at cost is provided.

We have put together a list of roles/jobs which we need help with and when, along with the estimated time commitment, if you or anyone you know is able to offer to help in anyway please get in touch using the form below.

Undertaking and record keeping of:

  • Tap and shower ‘flushing’ (for water hygiene)
  • Smoke detector / Fire alarm system testing
  • Fire extinguisher & blanket location checking
  • Fire escape signage checking

Weekly – on Wednesday daytime when the site maintenance team is on site.

50 weeks a year

1-2 hours per week

Ideally looking to build a team of 2-3 people who can commit on a rota basis to one or two weeks per month

Needs to be done whatever the weather

Undertaking and record keeping of:

  • Emergency lighting testing
  • Water temperature checking of taps
  • Fire escape door testing
  • Electricity meter reading

Monthly – Wednesday daytime

1 day per month

2 hours month

Ideally looking for 2 people (can be combined with the above)

Needs to be done whatever the weather

Check and tidy outdoor activities. Includes:

  • ensuring outside toilets are clean
  • replenish toilet rolls and soap
  • bins have been emptied
  • Campfire circle is tidy
  • woodpile is tidy
  • Check outside activities (all)

Weekly – Wednesday daytime

Approx. 40 weeks (when bookings are happening)

1-2 hrs week

More than one person could share the responsible and could could combine with other tasks.

Visit site, review and update the user instructions and risk assessments for all onsite activities, including checking the current Girlguiding requirements

Painting the inside of main building. Cleaning and touching up paint work in between the professional redecorations (every 5 years)

Check, clean and if necessary repair all the external signs on the site. Report missing or broken signs to county campsite officer to be replacement

Opening our onsite shop when requested by groups. Involves taking money for small souvenirs and badges purchased by young visitors and ensuring records takings are counted and recorded.

Join the Paxmead Management Committee as treasurer

Training provided will need to work closely with Campsite manager and be IT literate to use Xero and Checkfront (booking system)

Volunteers to become Paddle UK paddle sport instructors who can take out Brownies, Guides & Rangers on/in Paddleboards, Kata Kanus, Canoes & Kayaks.

Ad-hoc evenings and weekends

Sessions are in the evening and at weekends from May half term to October half term (river/weather conditions dependent)

Paddle UK membership paid for if doing 4 or more session.

Training provided at cost.

To take a sample of river water and drive to drop off point in Tolworth for testing each week of the paddlesport season.

Equipment and training provided. Mileage cost can be claimed.

Paddlesport season is May half term to October half term.

Keeping the grass mowed short enough to make an enjoyable outdoor space

Ride on mower – ideally a person with experience

Open for the season, prepare weekly kits, sweep annual seal and repair

To run Tomahawk sessions for visiting groups who do not have their own volunteers.

We are looking for up to 10 people for this role.

Free training provided with commitment to run 4 sessions in the first year.

Girlguiding Surrey West are looking for additional volunteers to help run and maintain Paxmead Riverside Base in Shepperton.  There is a list of tasks on the website which could be undertaken with various levels of commitment. These range from painting to proofreading, single service days to weekly visits. There is no need to have a connection to Girlguiding, just willingness to do something good within the community. If you cannot volunteer yourself, please consider sharing this so we can reach a wider audience.
